The planning application failed to adequately assess for flood risk and ignored the structure and its potential significance from an ecological standpoint – which is required under Irish and E.U legislation. It is plausible that the structure, with its distinct cave like characteristics, is being used by Bats as a summer and winter roosting site. The council needs to step in now and ensure the site is protected.
